An ode to pet parents
I have always wanted a puppy as long as I can remember. However, I was
also completely aware of the effort involved in taking care of one. Having
stayed in apartments and hostel rooms all my life, with a busy school/work
schedule, the idea of owning a pet only to coop them up without giving them the
time and space they deserve, seemed almost cruel.
But destiny intervened and I met my husband's two year old chocolate Labrador
retriever and I can tell you my life has never been the same, since.
So, our baby, who belonged to a therapy litter was picked up by my
husband as a puppy and christened Denzel. I still remember my first meeting with him. I was excited naturally but
to be completely frank, I was way more nervous than excited because I realized
Denzel was the family member who I had to impress the most. No pressure at all.
But then came this adorable goofball, who ran up to me and wanted to be
cuddled and fed and cuddled some more!! I have no words to describe the
endorphins that come rushing when this baby leaps all over you. No words.
Since I am home a good amount of time as I am preparing for my exams, we
have ample time to keep each other company. There is not much this baby wants – treats,
butt cuddles, treats, belly rubs, treats, long evening walks, dog park
visits, treats, early morning snuggles …. Did I mention treats?!
Though, the true fact is that, I have learnt a lot from him. He has
brought a level of discipline to my life that I totally appreciate. His
meticulous internal clock ensures he reminds me of his meal times, nap times
and walk times. I feel having a pet changes you, in the sense, it makes you
aware of the person you are when you have someone completely dependent on you
for their food, comfort, entertainment and company. It gives you an overall
sense of responsibility, but in a manner that doesn’t overwhelm you. I would
encourage everyone to get a pet just to have that incredible feeling of joy
and contentment. To experience such unconditional love and affection is a privilege
one shouldn’t deny oneself!
Having Denzel around has been fulfilling in so many ways. He is my
patient baby who waits without making a noise till I wake up, lest he disturbs
my sleep. He is my baby who stares at me with those eternally sad-looking puppy
dog eyes and knows how to get his way every single time. He is my baby who
springs up from his couch when he sees me to get his daily dose of cuddles and
snuggles! He is my baby who loves to fall asleep squeezing my arm with his four
paws.
He is my baby who decided to keep me.
Denzel is a sweetheart
